5/20/11- This year's Stotesbury Regatta on the Schuylkill, the world's biggest high school regatta, might as well have been called the monsoon regatta because of the periodic rain that poured down during the day. Harriton Novice Girls, JV8+ Girls and Boys, Varsity 4+ Girls and Boys and Lightweight Girls 4+ participated among 178 boats from high schools as far away as Ontario. The Girls JV 8+ heat alone had a field of 53 crews. They and the Lightweight Girls 4+ reached afternoon semi-finals.

5/8/11- CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS Harriton boats were among more than 400 crews racing on the Schuylkill, in the final event of the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association spring season, on a Mother’s Day with perfect weather.  After admirable placements for all boats in morning head races, each with a field of as many as two dozen,  two Harriton teams received silver medals in the afternoon finals:

5/1/11- After a two-week break because of a weather-related cancellation and the Easter holiday, Harriton crew teams were back on the water to compete in three regattas in three different locales. Here are the highlights of a very busy weekend in which every rower came on strong.

Harriton boats dominated the Upper Merion Invitational on Saturday. Both boys' girls' teams placed first in multiple events.

At the 2011 Cooper Cup in New Jersey on Sunday, Girls Ltw 4+ (Alison Frank, Katherine Kanehann, Eliza Brooks, Emily Dvorchak, and coxswain Catherine Haslam) and Girls JV/2nd Varsity 8+ (Emma Butler, Sylvie Krause, Gaby Kursman-Neri, Anna Wegbreit, Hannah Barton, Devon Kelly, Rebecca Jacobs, Samantha Lincoln, and coxswain Rachel Bookman) won first place in their respective events. Each girl in the two boats received a medal for her achievement.

Back in Pennsylvania on Sunday, novice boats participated in the novice-only Dr. Robert White Regatta on the Schuylkill. The Boys 4+ boat placed first in their heat, qualifying them for finals where they came in first.

4/12/11- Updates to Loop Fundraiser and Weekend of May 14 Schedules

Timeline
: We will re-rig at 7:00am at Conshohocken (students are responsible for their own transportation); team will take buses to Boathouse Row for Loop at 8:00am (arrive approx. at 9:00am at Llyod Hall), then the team will get picked up around 11:30am and be dropped off at Conshohocken by Noon.

Note: This year everyone will be running (no biking or rollerblading)... for those who are self-described as "non-runners" they will be encouraged to jog at a comfortably safe and reasonable pace (ultimately they will be requested to start, don't stop, and finish).

We will not participate in the NJSRC on Sat., May 14th due to a venue change.

Instead we plan to split the team on Sunday, May 1st so that the Novices will row in Philly for Dr. White and the Varsity will row in NJ for Cooper Cup.

Originally we weren't planning on racing in the Cooper Cup, but since the  NJSRC changed the site of the regatta to Manasquan Resvoir in Howell, NJ (which is almost to 2 hrs. away by bus on the date of the Sr. prom) we are opting to participate in the Cooper Cup on the Cooper River instead. This is a extremely logical decision, esp. since the Cooper River is the site for this year's SRAA and we will avoid Sr. Prom conflicts by not participating in the NJSRC.

On Sat., May 14th instead of rowing in the NJSRC, we will have Saturday practice and encourage the kids to attend the Dad Vail Regatta to watch collegiate acing. This year the Gold Cup will be coming back to the US: http://www.dadvail.org/?GoldCup.
Additionally, the DVRC is planning a rowing clinic the previous Thurs: http://www.dadvail.org/?Clinic

07/9/10- I am proud to announce that the PSRA Board of Directors unanimously appointed Anne Miller (former FHC Commodore and mother of Asst. Coach Liz Miller) to serve as the PSRA Executive Committee Secretary.

Of note, Anne Miller is also a fully certified USRowing Referee and a dedicated member of the Stotesbury Cup Regatta Committee.

Like many, Anne Miller began her rowing experience not as an athlete but rather as a supportive parent.

With that in mind, it is my great hope that all Harriton Crew Parents will stay actively involved in the program by continuing to volunteer in the myriad of activities associated with the sport of rowing.

Whether it be serving as an FHC Board or Committee member, volunteering during the Flick series or SCR, or spear-heading a new fundraising effort to benefit our kids, your contribution of time and effort is of great value and is deeply appreciated.

Enjoy the summer months and pls. take the time to reflect upon how you may contribute in supporting Harriton Crew in preparing for the Spring 2011 race season.

Yours in Crew,
Coach Calimag

The season got off to a great start with the Girls Ltwt 4, rowed by Katherine Kanehann (stroke), Eliza Brooks, Sylvie Kraus, Alison Frank and coxswain Danielle DiStefano placed 1st overall, ahead of Lower Merion with more than an 8 second lead.

Harriton’s Boys JV 4 lead their heat and placed 2nd overall, less than 2 seconds behind Moorestown. Rachel Bookman coxed, with rowers Shane Foust (stroke), James Butler, Tyler Schechter and Tyler Cohen.

The Girls JV 4+ placed 4th in their heat and 7thth overall in their class with a time of 6:04, with rowers Rachel Marx (stroke), Rebecca Jacobs, Gabrielle Kursman-Neri, Ali Grady and coxswain Hilary Goldberg.

The Boys Ltwt 4, rowed by Bradley Watson (stroke), Erik Jenssen, Jared Matt, Alex Menard and coxed by Connor Wortley placed 4th in their heat and 5th overall, ahead of Bonner and Lower Merion. Harriton’s second Boys Ltwt 4, coxed by Larissa McDonogh-Wong, with rowers Christopher Dolan (stroke), Steve Hanson, Cameron Trainer and Brian Ellis placed 3rd in their heat and 9th overall ahead of Episcopal Academy.

Harriton’s Girls Varsity 4, rowed by Tory Zuzelo (stroke), Jen Margulies, Cara Conwell, Emily Dvorchak, with coxswain Evan Opall placed 4th in their heat and 4th overall out of 14 boats with a time of 6:06.

03/23/10- Parents- You are not permitted at any time to pull into the lot at Villanova Boathouse. This is a rule mandated by Villanova University.  There is too much traffic with boats and students to allow any cars, this includes weekends.  You can park in the lot on the right hand side just after Cherry Street.  It is only one tenth of a mile from the boathouse, students can call their parents to drive up to the entrance to the boathouse (but not entering) or the student can walk to the parking lot.

If you are picking up your student, you must notify your child's individual Coach in writing (email or note).  There will not be any last minute changes. If there is no advance notice given,  the students will have to take the bus to Harriton;  this is school policy.

This also includes any students who are driving to the Boathouse on the weekends. There are no exceptions: Coaches are the only cars permitted in the lot at all times.

In addition as a courtesy, please email your rowers' coach if your child will not be at practice if they are sick from school.  None of the coaches work at Harriton and will not get the "absent" list.  This will make planning for practice more efficient.  If you child is missing practice for any reason, please be in communication with their coach.

12/14/09- Harriton Power Oar Club’s  (HPOC) first fall season of racing was more than any of the coaches could ask for. We are happy to announce that the boys Novice 4+ (Evan Opal, Chris Dolan, Cameron Trainer, Bradley Watson, Bryan Ellis) took home the Gold at the Bill Braxton regatta. The Varsity 4+ (Rachel Bookman, Shane Foust, Tyler Cohen, Tyler Schechter, Erik Jenssen) won their first heat, allowing them to qualify for semis. In the semi race against great competition they took second with a time of 5:04. Making finals was the goal of this boat from their beginning, and that they did. In the finals they finished 5th with a time of 5:11. The competition was heavy, considering our JV rowers had to row in the varsity category. The Varsity 4+ beat out 26 varsity boats! The women of HPOC had their best performance in the Frostbite regatta, a 2K meter sprint. The girls raced in a V8+, and placed 7/18th. A boat mixed of novice, JV, and Varsity rowers put forth a great effort. This showed the coaches how their rowing and strength was matched by few. Thank you to all who helped make the HPOC, Harriton fall rowing club a reality.  To see Harriton fall crew pictures, click here.

3/27/09- The PSRA needs your help. We are asking/encouraging all of you to use re-usable water bottles in order to minimize the heaps plastic waste that we produce each Sunday.
Not only will you be acting responsibly towards the environment, but you'll be saving a ton of money on water. If your kids don't already have their own, they can find re-usable metal water bottles for sale at the T-shirt tents.
Also, we encourage you to please use large coolers of water at the parent's tent instead of individual water bottles. Let's all make the effort to minimize our plastic waste.
This small act of re-using water bottles can have a great impact on the environment we live in!
Thank you, The PSRA

Pls. take advantage of the Parent Portal to keep yourselves abreast of your child's academic progress.

The first official Athletic Academic Eligibility List has been published and there are a few student-athletes listed on the team that have been identified as being "At Risk" or are currently "Ineligible" to participate.

The Coaching Staff will speak to each student on the list privately and if warranted will call Parents directly. Pls. continue to discuss or open a dialogue with your child about their current grades. We hope to avoid any potential awkward conversation between the Coach Staff and Parents, some of whom may not realize that their child's academic standing is in jeopardy.

"At Risk" students may continue to practice at the discretion of Parents and the Coaching Staff. "Ineligible" students may not participate in practices or in competition and have been directed to stay home and focus on academic endeavors.

1/22/09- PHYSICALS (PIAA) CLARIFICATION:
Clarification
If rowers completed the PIAA Comprehensive Physical for any prior sports season, it is good for Crew season.

If, however, student-athletes plan to row Lightweight they must get a Dr.'s signature ok-ing participation (150lbs. max for Boys... 130lbs. max for Girls).

Lightweight Rowing:
• New rowers do not need to get weight certification/clearance since they typically compete in Freshmen/Novice races only.

• Wrestlers who have been cleared to wrestle at weight classes under 150lbs. do not need a new physical, but do need an ok for Ltwt status.
