Coach Pochettino began rowing freshman year at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia and had the dubious distinction of being one of the least talented rowers on the team. His Junior year though cut from SJP he began sculling out of Fairmount Rowing Association in the spring of 2002. In the summer of 2002, he raced in the Junior Single category, making the final in most races he entered.

During the fall of his senior year of high school, he made the Varsity 8+, a boat whose accomplishments included placing 10th overall in the Youth 8+ at the Head of the Charles. Among the 9 crews beating them were the freshmen of Brown, Harvard, Yale, and Penn.

After great physical and mental improvement, Coach Pochettino earned a spot on the SJP quad his Sr. year. He started in the Varsity 8+, wound up as 7-seat in the 2V8, where we won Stotesbury Cup Gold medal in the event.

The summer between high school and college, he rowed in the Junior Double out of Fairmount, where he and Tommy Owston placed 2nd at Summer Nationals (and won the Junior quad event), and 3rd at Canadian Henley.

Coach Pochettino rowed for all 4 years at the University of Pennsylvania, as stroke of the Freshman 8+ in the spring (7th at IRAs), in the bow pair of the varsity 8+ for sophomore and junior years, and ended up as stroke of the 2nd Varsity 8+ senior year (8th at IRAs), graduating in 2007.
